Winning money as a pro gamer usually requires entering tournaments and winning (or at least coming runner up). This means that, although some winnings are quite impressive, only the people at the very top of their games will win significant money. Money will also vary massively based on games, even within similar genres. Games that have a huge budget behind them and require a consistent player base to earn money, such as Fortnite, or games where the tournament itself draws huge crowds like Starcraft 2 tend to have bigger prize pools than many other games.
